Notes for Judic/ Grietje b’ Manus [and Rachel] Mendel Champignon Campion
stated in her Marriage-Act and Notriety-Act as o.a: ‘Judic Champignon, daughter of Manus Mendel deceased and Rachel Samuel Champignon, living in Rotterdam, Kikkersteeg — born in Tienhoven 8 april 1787’ [NB: her aunt Judic Samuel Champignon (41 years old in 1816) is mentioned “Moei van smoeders zijde”]
[NB: in her death act she is stated as ‘Grietje Campion’ — her birthplace as ‘Amsterdam’ — and her parents as ‘Jacob Abraham Campion and Mande Mendel’ — thus completely different from earlier acts and with serious mistakes, possibly derived from earlier wrong acts: (1) the surnames of her father and mother are swapped — (2) the first names ‘Jacob Abraham’ are maybe mistaken from the erroneous Name-Assumption-Act of her mother’s brother ‘Abraham Samuel’ — (3) she had got her surname ‘Campion’ or (misspelled:) ‘Champignon’ from her mother Rachel who was supposedly unmarried at her birth — (4) the name ‘Mande Mendel’ is a mystery — (5) that her first name is stated as ‘Grietje’ instead of the earlier ‘Judic’ or ‘Judith’ is not unusual; happens in many cases of this period]
