Notes for Jacob b’ Samuel Levi Groenewoudt
1771 Veghel, living over 4 years in the house of his brother Jonas [acc. to a certificate of good behaviour dd 12.12.1776]
1777 moving via Halsteren to Steenbergen.
1795 Steenbergen (Volkstelling/census:) “Jacob Levie 2 manspersonen boven de 25 jaren (sedert 2 jaren of meer binnen de Rep woonachtig)...... -- 5 [overigen] zoo mans vrouwe als kinderen” [NB: the second man older than 25 may well be a David Samuel -- cf the notes of Jacob’s son Samuel Levy]
1810 Steenbergen (BR /census:) “Wijk A nr 17 -- JacobLevy (60, b. Rijkensghem), Lena Lion (62, b. Hilvarenbeek), Antje Ohen (18, b. Sprang)” [cf his son]
1811 it is noteworthy that Jacob Samuel Levy didn’t assume a (new) surname. In acts from 1814 and 1815 he’s still named Jacob Levy. Only in his death act he is stated with the double surname Levy Groenewoud -- maybe because meanwhile his son Samuel had elsewhere registered the new name Groenewoudt. The when and where of this Name Assumption is so far not found. His daughter Eva is for the first time stated with the name Groenewoud in a notarial act dd 1820 in Tholen]
