Notes for Juspa/ Josef b’ Isaac Goldschmidt Aschaffenburg segal mi Ostheim z Pfau
He got married outside Frankfurt and was housed several years in Ostheim, apparently his wife’s native town.
[There are several ‘Ostheims’ in Germany. Supposed in ET it is Ostheim near Friedberg — but I propose as more likely: Ostheim is the town that later, since the 18th century, is named Grossostheim, situated 8 km southwest from Aschaffenburg, where Juspa’s father Isaac b’ Moshe Goldschmidt had been living and after which he was ‘nicknamed’ when he got his right of residence in Frankfurt. Father and son must have had their goldsmith workshop there. In the similar way Juspa must have got his surname ‘Ostheim’ since he moved to Frankfurt — still another small village Ostheim is east of Windecken within 2 km and at 20 km northeast from Frankfurt — JG]Juspa was a goldsmith of great fame and even got the esteem of Emperor Karl V on whose personal intercession he obtained his Right of Residence in Frankfurt and was granted the special permission to build his own house [cf KracauerII, p.288
