Notes for Libman/Eliezer b’ Wolf Buchsbaum segal z Buchsbaum
‘ha Rofe’ [= the Doctor]
He studied medicine in Leiden.
1697 he began practicing in Frankfurt as one of the 3 at most doctors permitted in the Judengasse.
1702 he gave up his practice, making place for his younger brother Judman [cf] and going into business which seemed to him more profitable. Through his wife’s family in Worms he came in connection with the Court-Factor Shimon b’ Shemuel zu Landau and his sons. He got involved as an intermediary in their financing of the emperial army in the siege(s) of Landau. This ended in a debt to the Landau family of Fl. 8500. Though lawfully summoned, he didn’t pay and after a long procedure he was imprisoned in october 1714 in the “Schuldturm” of Frankfurt. During the weeks he was staying there he wrote a thick book on Medecine. He was released on bail of his brother, his wife and his father. The issue seems to have ended in a settlement with the Landau family. But on the ‘Liste’ of 1721 he is mentioned with his wife and 2 children as “abgekommene Leute” [gone astray].
House “Buchsbaum”, later moving to the Wetterau [a region north of Frankfurt, south of Giessen]
