Notes for ** NN? b’ Moshe? Oppenheim
* tentatively inserted as the unknown father of Daniel-Jechiel b’ NN Oppenheim Heidelberg Öttingen — who possibly was brought up in the household of Moshe b’ Liwa Oppenheim z Schwert
Allthough many facts and details are known about the career of Daniel-Jechiel Oppenheimer Heidelberg (d. 1697), the identity of his parents remains
not known — so far.
The question of his descent was considered extensively in the exchange of letters during the years 1935-1939 between Berthold Rosenthal and Shlomo/Fritz Ettlinger — cf
®39, p.470-241 (the letters are in reverse order!). [NB: the same Ettlinger who was in later years the author of “Ele Toldot” ®27].
Combining their findings and conclusions with more recent facts from other sources does slightly help to deduce the place of Daniel-Jechel b’ NN in the Oppenheim ‘family tree’.
Main elements in this delimiting method are several sources where the term ‘Vetter’ is used in a kinship description of Daniel-Jechiel (and his son Gerson) with other Oppenheim descendants. Nowadays the literal meaning of ‘Vetter’ is ‘Cousin’. But in the 17th and 18th century the term ‘Vetter’ could also be used instead of ‘Nephew’ (= ’Neffe’ in german) or even in a more general meaning of ‘Second-cousin’ (‘Grossneffe’), which leaves many possibilities.
All assumptions considered, the conclusion is that the kinship of ‘NN’ father of Daniel-Jechiel must comply with the following 4 preconditions:
& (1) NN is an uncle or a great-uncle of ‘the imperial Court-factor’ Samuel b’ Wolf-Simon [b’ Leib] Oppenheimer Heidelberg (b. ca 1630; d. 17o3 Wien) — cf
& (2) NN is an uncle or a great-uncle of the above-mentioned Samuel’s brother Moshe b’ Wolf-Simon [b’ Leib] Oppenheimer Heidelberg (b. ca 1635; d. 17o1 Heidelberg), who was also the son-in-law of NN’s son Daniel-Jechiel!— cf
& (3) NN is an uncle or a cousin of Ischai b’ Gomprecht [b’ Leib] Oppenheim z Schwert (b. ca 1615; d. 1688 Frankfurt) — cf
& (4) NN is an uncle or a cousin of Nathan b’ Daniel-Jechiel [b’ Moshe] Oppenheim (b. ca 1640; d. 1678 Wien) — cf
Summarized: most likely NN is a grandson or a great-grandson of Moshe b’ Liwa Oppenheim z Schwert (b. ca 1550, d. 1626 Frankfurt) or eventually a foster-grandson, i.c. via Moshe’s young deceased brother Anshel b’ Liwa Oppenheim z Esel (b. ca 1545, d. 1573 Frankfurt) — cfLess likely ‘forefather options’ are the other brothers of Moshe b’ Liwa: Süsskind b’ Liwa Oppenheim in Worms and Josef b’ Liwa Oppenheim z weissen Löwen.
Obviously a precise answer remains speculative, more so because the listing (via ET) of the sons of Moshe and Anshel and brothers is not complete and the approach of ‘name-reduction’ via the given names of Daniel’s children offers hardly a clue — perhaps aside from the name ‘Jechiel’, the sacral name of Moshe’s second father-in-law Michel-Jechiel b’ Herts Zunz (d. 1585) — cf
All considered: following with much reservation the lineage by which Daniel-Jechiel and his unknown father *NN are here tentatively deduced as being descendants of Moshe b’ Liwa Oppenheim z Schwert (d. 1626) and his second spouse Hindle b’ Michel-Jechiel Zunz (d.1624).[see also the nearer explanation in the Record-sheet of son Daniel-Jechiel (d. 1697)]
