As yet no one has succeeded to establish a complete lineage from the forefather Mostel b’ Josef Schaffhausen Goldschmidt to all of his later descendants. In particular, still a problem is the provenance of two [supposed] brothers Shmoel or Samuel (ca 1575-1624, father of a.o. Josef/Jobst Goldschmidt Hameln segal) and Liebmann or Lev (ca 1575-1627, father of a.o. Baruch/Benedict Goldschmidt Kassel segal). They are the progenitors of the many branches and subbranches of the numerous Goldschmidt family.
The given names of Shmoel and Liebman are mentioned, in various spellings, in many lists, documents or acts, but in every instance their patronyms are lacking. The same deficiency goes for one Maier Goldschmidt z Lilie , nicknamed “Rosskamm” (ca 1575-1630, living in Frankfurt and Kassel) — Their unknown fathers are the missing links in the lineage.
In several genealogies those missing links are filled up without enough valid arguments.
A better method would be keeping restraint and joining more than one option — suggesting several of the most likely amongst the countless parentage possibilities.
