Notes for * [Moshe] Jehuda- Leib/ Lev/ Liebman b’ ? Goldschmidt segal
* Tentatively inserted as the most likely father of Benedict Goldschmidt and his brothers

— [NB: the first of his ‘given names [Moshe] should be considered as a prepostive (ceremonial) title, thus not as his regular/ordinary name given at his birth — JG]

1606 Hebenshausen — he is mentioned as “Liebmann Goldschmidt”, borrowing 400 taler … — and in that same year he is mentioned together with his [possible] brother: “Schmuell undt Liebmann Juden”. They are pleading in defence of their “Verwandter” (relative) who was also named “Liebmann” from Witzenhausen, accused of murder. It is suggested ®35 that this relative might be identical with “Liebmann Smoll”, who was in 1591 (together with all Jewish citizens) expelled from Göttingen and who had settled since ca 1600 in Witzenhausen. [So attention: the person (Liebmann) in this alinea is not the same as the Liebman/Lev of this “Person Card”!]
1612 — he is still living in Hebenshausen, accused of falsifying coins.
1613 — he was fined to 30 Florins, mentioned as “Liebmann Jude der Jung”, having moved to Bischhausen [situated 13 km eastward from Hebenshausen, where his [supposed] brother had kept staying — till:]
1618 Witzenhausen — he is mentioned as “Liebman” on the List of 6 Jews who were paying protection money (‘Schutzgeld’) — while most of the others are his possible family members ®35: “Schmull Jude”, “Moses Lewen Sohn”, “Benedikt” and perhaps “Lew der Alt [perhaps the last could be the here afore-mentioned accused relative— JG]
1622 Witzenhausen — the two [supposed] brothers are still both mentioned on the List: “Schmuell Jude” and on the next line after him “Libmann Jude”
1623 march 6, Kassel: in a complaint against the Jews “Schmoll” and “Liebmann” in Witzenhausen.
1625 Witzenhausen: “Liebman” is mentioned on the List. Shmu’el was deceased the year before.
1626 Witzenhausen: the last year he is mentioned, this time as “Lew oder Liebman
1627 presumably he was deceased.
— [NB: this is a summary of facts since 1606, for the most part gathered by Randy Schoenberg and published, with referral to many sources, in the Geni website (last update 2022, april 29)]
— [All these facts considered in coherence Liebmann/Lew/Leib and Schmoll/Shmu’el must have been close relatives, but is it certain that they were brothers? Schmull/Shmu’el might as well be an uncle of Liebman/Lev. The name of their father(s) is found nowhere, as yet. Furthermore the link between Liebmann with Benedict Goldschmidt b’ Jehuda-Leib Kassel and Benedict’s brothers is not wholly certain — etc]
