Notes for Samuel b’ NN Nieukoop (Campion)
[NB: stated as ‘Samuel Nieukoop’ in the death act of his wife, while ‘Niekoop’ is stated in the death act of his daughter Rachel as her birthplace]
[he probably died before 1785, as in that year his son Jacob named his oldest son ’Samuel’]
The surname ‘Campion’ is assumed by both his sons Jacob and Abraham — in 1811 and since then mangled and spelled wrongly in many versions: Campignon, Champignon, Kampinjon, Kampion, Kampioen,……. The jewish citizens could’t write read or spell words in dutch and the county clerk had to write down the name (or place) as he thought to hear it. During the years some of those erroneous versions became the official names of different branches of Samuel’s descendants.
