Notes for Isaak/ Itsek/ Itzig b’ Jobst Goldschmidt Hameln segal z Wanne
Parnas — Gove — Dayan — “Jizchak b’ Josef sg”l Hammel” [mentioned in several epitaphs of his family; cf ET] ®23, ®26 — also known as Itzig zur Wanne or as Itsek Hammel
House “Korb und Wanne”
24.4.1648 obtaining his Right of Residence (Stättigkeit) in Frankfurt
1677, ca april: He goes to Wesel, to the (second) wedding of his son Samuel [cf] and from there to Hannover meeting his brothers at the Tomb of their father Jobst/Josef b’ Shmu’el Goldschmidt [cf Memoirs of Glikl Hameln ®23].
He and later his widow Hindchen & sons were the business representatives in Fankfurt of Hindchen’s cousin Samuel b’ Leib Oppenheimer, imperial Court-factor in Vienna — cf. They also were purveyors of the Landcountess of Hessen-Kassel, for instance in her siege of Strassburg ®28, ®32.
NB!: Controversy about the year of his death: (1) According to Dietz [p. 126 ®28] in 1674 his “widow” announces that she’ll carry on the firm “Isaak Goldschmidt seel. Wittib & Söhne”. But this must be a mistake (Dietz does not mention his source). (2) the year 1674 can’t be correct, as from several sources [cf: “Kandidatenbeurteilungen vor dem Rat, 12.7.1682” ®26] can be deduced that he was still alive in 1682. (3) Yet, on the other hand, 1700 is mentioned in Ele Toldot as his death year, which seems very late and conflicting to the comment of his sister-in-law Glikl Hamel, that he didn’t get older than 50 years [p. 169 ®23] — Unfortunately the burial of Isaak is not mentioned in Frankfurt. It’s plausible that he died elsewhere, possibly in 1682 or 1683, while travelling and organizing financial support for his wife’s cousin Samuel Oppenheimer, who was day and night busy enforcing the army of the Emperor to avert the siege of Vienna in 1683 by the gigant army of the Ottoman Sultan, an immense threat for the whole of Europe. At the same time he must have been involved in Oppenheimer’s deliveries in the successful defence of Philippsburg (south of Mannheim) against Louis XIV, in 1682. ®33
